Claude Monet

Claude Monet is known as a founder of Frech impressionist painting.  In fact, the term, “Impressionist” came from the name of his 1872 painting, “Impression Sunrise”, a seascape of Le Havre.

He was an early proponent of the “en plein air” (open air) painting technique – painting what he saw with his own eyes in the outdoors, rather than copying from styles of the Old Masters.

Monet spent time in France, England, Italy and the Netherlands.  Some of his best known works were painted on his beloved property at Giverny.  He produced many paintinga in “series”, constantly reinterpreting subjects like haystacks, the Houses of Parliament, and water lilies in different weather, times of day and lighting.
